Red is now gone

RED

Dear Friends,

Now I have to tell you we cannot find Red she is gone and we have have no hope to see her again.

What a loss for the marsh pride, however they must move on that is the fact of life in the wild.
Q is what had happen to her? I don't know and no one can tell me exactly what is the story.

One thing for sure we have to remember in the wild office, 'she is one of the mum of the powerful boys', ''Notch Boys'', well done Red when ever your are, your Sons have become the most powerful group of Male Lions in the mara, following your power, leadership, protection and providing  while your at the marsh pride.

I wish you all the best,

Salaams

Very sad indeed, but at least her legacy lives on through her powerful sons and she reached a good age.

Now it's at least 2 lions the Mara has lost.
One subadult male we watched on 13 Feb close to the Mara/Talex conflux with a huge gash didn't make it (confirm from Naibor) and now RED.........
It's devastating.

I hope Jackson you find out at one stage what happened to her...........

I am so sad........

Is it possible she was the lion that was poisened? What about Romeo has he been found? I hope that this isn't true and miraculously she reappears...i loved to watch her on big cat diary...this news made me cry...how sad for the marsh pride...she was an amazing provider! She will never be forgotten and her legacy will live on thru her powerful sons. Rest in peace Red.

Jackson we did see one lioness that seem very ill /or old/ and very skinny on our trip...and all alone..last week we saw her twice also on our way out of the Mara when we were heading for Nairobi. Could this be Red I am thinking now...must compare the photos. Last year we did see her in good health. She was great!! xx Babette de Jonge

What sad news, she was (hopefully still is) a fantastic lioness & mother, so patient with all the little ones. And what a legacy she has left - Notch boys! Like you say, that is life in the Mara. Hope you do manage to find out exactly what has happened to her.
All the best. x

Mpendwa rafiki,

I am sorry for Red. She was the most beautiful and powerful lioness we have ever seen. I can just remember her sheer body moving toward us in our last day there last year, such a massive animal we could never mistake identity even still some hundreds of meters away from us, just by observing her size and steady confident steps towards the rest of the marsh pride resting under the shade by our vehicle - then finally no doubt was left by the way the pride had welcomed as soon as she approched. It is a good moment I will keep of her.

Whatever have happened with her, she has been probably the most successful lioness in the Mara. We will all miss her.

By the way Jackson, we forgot to ask you, and Romeo? Is he still missing, too?

Oh Jackson, what horrible news. Red and White Eye were my favourites - I can't believe Red has gone. She was such a brilliant huntress and mother. Loved watching her on "Big Cat". I remember her getting cornered by hyenas and being rescued by the rest of the pride. Could this have happened again? Perhaps in time you'll find out what happened to her. RIP Red. Love MD x

So sad to hear the news. I was hoping the info would prove incorrect but having read the other posts it seems she has gone. A real shame if a warrior like her was poisoned by humans. RIP

Since she was really killed then that is bad news to me, because see, that lioness had inspired me to go exactly at that part of Afrika and I was really looking forward to seeing her this year! I am very mad now! since those animals bring so much tourism money into the area, cannot be done something, like for example some of those money to go to a fund which to compansate the lost cattles? Why noone hasn't done anything yet? If it is not for those whild cats i dont think many ppl would have been visiting and paying for anything there at all! And now surely- I AM NOT!
Sorry If my tone is rude, but I am very very upset and I rather go to Kunene, Namibia where ppl spare the animals most of the times and understand what benefits come from them! And you know what else is very irratating to me- how come where ppl live animals die all the time- wild animals and ppl say: "that's life" and then, when i watch documentaries ppl have the chance to hepl the animals and then they go: " We can not interfere!"!Just like the case of Honey the cheetah that was sht in the belly by a "vet" and left her three babies orphans! I wonder how do you go and kill an animal like that, what if someone comes and kills their mothers or wifes for example! Yes, the animal did kill a cattle, but it is its nature to do it, because it was driven by it's instincts, and we call ourselves HUMANS, because we can think about our actions and not live obeying our instincts without even knowing it! I am so mad, i shouldn't keep writting!

So very sorry to hear about Red. What a beautiful lioness she was. I hope it was old age and nothing sinister as I would hate to think that. Please do your best to find out what happened Jackson.
RIP Red

Jackson, this is such terrible, sad news. Can't beleive I am sitting here crying such tears over this beautiful lioness.
It is particularly poignant if true that she met her end by unnatural circumstances. It is very different if the animal dies through old age or normal things that happen in nature.
RIP Red-and thanks for all the memories.

Jackson, this is the worst news. It is a tremendous loss for the Marsh Pride and I sincerely hope it was not for the reason stated above. Please do your best to find out what happened to such a beautiful, powerful lioness. She will be sorely missed.
RIP Red x

Dear DouDou-Toki,

Thank you for caring for our Animals I love red too.
She was still very strong it was just a big big loss for us in the mara.

Dear Anonymous,

I feel them as you what a loss for us all I love all members of the marsh pride and other prides too.
Not coming to the mara will not be the solution, We can never give up as conservationist its had for us to watch things go wrong and nothing we can do part just to report some time like the case of Red,
People new about it for a few months but no one can say it.

It was had for me too to tell you Red is no longer with us it took me a while but I have always raise the flag just to let people know its possible Red is no longer with us.
I will up date you what might had happen to her and a few other lions.
It could have been worst but its one member if it was poison then it could have almost kill every member of the marsh pride we need each other in protecting this wonderful friends always think of the marsh lions when you go to sleep.
Thank you.

Jackson.

To Fionnabhair, Dear, this tribute to the great lioness is because of her loss not because she is doing well in the wild with her family, but because she was killed, and this is the great time and place to talk about those issues if we want to there be animals to go see and talk about later, and if it wasn't for that this blog wouldnt exist! Too many were lost, that is why i am irratated and soooo upset, because something must be done. For example I donate thru Nat Geo to some fund which is made because there is now less then 20 000 lions in whole Africa, and they are suppposed to compensate lost cattles to lions, but i still see animals disappear, and i would like to see such Conservation mesurments taking place everywhere, and there is no better occasion then this one, neither plase or time to talk about such a great issue!Good day, Dear!
P.S. Just saying goodbuy to an animal isn't going to solve anything, and it is also sad, because Red is not going to see this tribute neither will ever again run on the savannah! Good Day!
Thank you Jackson for your response, I respect your work and the people, I just wish something can be done from a higher authority so PEOPLE and ANIMALS can be happy!

Is the money donated to national geographic given to the farmers who graze and lose cattle within reserve boundaries?
I wouldn't have thought so...

The money coming from tourism would serve a much greater purpose i think, to deny that is sad indeed...

Anonymous said...

Fionabhair, who is denying that a tourism money would serve better? If you are reffering to me or doubting my knowledge of it, you have misunderstood!I said in my comments that people need to understand that, before kill an animal which they could greatly benefit from, and i made clear that exactly from turism they should be compensated! Also, mentioning that project,I was thinking of ideas that could be actually pretty helpful if they were put into action everywhere, not just in the mara with the help of people who love to see, encounter, photograph, document wildlife to help the people who live with it, so they wouldnt suffer losses to the animals! also, donating is a great way to start a preservation projects, because see, a lot of people do it, especially those who love and care, but have no ability to visit every year! I grately doubt that just saying "RIP" is going to do any help- not to the animals, not to the people and not to ourselves or this whole world! Jackson's update post above says a lot, he is indeed very wise!
Also it is disrepectful to say that ppl who raise money are not spending it for the purpose-it is a great offence to the ppl from which many got to see lions for a first time in a documentary probably and who have dedicated their lifes for over 20 years now to preserve it! I hope they and every other one giving, working, caring and doing anything for the cause succeed! Good luck to them and Jackson!

Very very upset today after the news about red , another great mother and hunter killed by a spear on the end of a human hand ,Apart from the fact WE as big cat followers witnessed the strong bond she had with her pride , and the bravery she showed time and time again especially if the cubs or any of the pride was in danger,A great loss such as red should put boundries into place now about killing our cats ,more should be done to protect them , i was reading the reports on the endangerded species on big cats , they are criticaly endangered with so few left in the world it really worries me that soon these great creatures will only be seen in a book as an animal that use to live amongest us ,I will post on the endangered species cite just need to upload it first there is loads of info on that including reports from different countries and the protective measures that should be followed thks for taking your time to read this

As promised here is the web page to view File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat - Quick View
to firm action to halt the decline of tigers and other big cats, ... as there is mounting evidence of increasing illegal and organised trade across Africa; ...
www.cites.org/eng/cop/15/inf/E15i-30.pdf .
There is so much infomation on this site to get the home page up just type in www.cites.org/eng/.co.uk then just type in the info you require ,
hope you find this information useful, remember this is the main cite for endangered animals and it doesnt single out a particular person or place

I am a big fan of Big Cat Diary and Jackson's blog. I was saddened to hear of Red's untimely and unecessary death. Education and patience is one way to get peaple to understand and value the lives of these magnificent animals and their habitats. Hopefully Red's death will cause those involved to think about the conequenses of their actions. It will also help others to fight to save the animals and their habitats. Rest in peace Red.
